Chapter Seven

Leaning back in his chair, Malek rubbed the spot between his eyes in irritation, wondering how his plans had been pushed so far off track. Things should have been so simple, should have gone so smoothly! Instead, he had a fugitive locked in his quarters, and now the city inspectors planned on boarding his ship to examine the cargo again.

“Is our ‘guest’ feeling better?” Nolin asked as he and Colin joined him in the dining area. Each man poured himself a cup of coffee and sat across from him at the table.

“She isn’t exactly pleased to be sequestered in my room, but all the effects of the drug seem to have worn off.” Dropping the front legs of his chair down, Malek slid the communicator screen across the table to them.

“Shit!” Colin exclaimed. “I thought the warden was gonna make sure we didn’t have to deal with that.”

“It seems, with the ‘prison break’ two days ago, things have changed.” He took a long sip from his own drink. “We will need to move the extra cargo to the hidden compartments. Where are Dylan and Palec?”

“In the engine room.” It was Colin who answered. “The part we needed arrived on today’s supply ship. They are getting it installed as quickly as possible. We all know how important it is for us to leave, sooner rather than later.”

“Good!” Malek stood and the others joined him. “Immediately following the new inspection, we will leave for the rendezvous.”

“How is your young woman going to react to leaving the city?” Nolin asked as they headed to the cargo bay.

“Does it really matter?” Malek shrugged his shoulders, not wanting to admit that it mattered—a lot. “She doesn’t exactly have any other choice. Returning to the warden would be worse.”

“What are you planning to do with her?” Colin asked.

“I don’t know!” Malek said thoughtfully. “I just don’t know!”
